Report: Software Engineering at Google

It's a pretty-good survey of important systems (technical systems and people-systems) at Google Engineering. When I say "survey" I mean it covers a lot of topics lightly. E.g., the chapter "How to Work Well on Teams" is by Brian Fitzpatrick who co-wrote a whole book about teams. The chapter doesn't try to cover everything in the book but it covers some well. Each chapte

Today's review! A Perfect Heresy by Courtney Maguire:

"I give this five stars, because, by the end, I was entirely caught up in the story and moved by the powerful emotional relationship between Jax and Koi... a unique take on some age-old ideas about cultures and how they rise and fall."

"Voice of the Wildcats" (2014)
Alan Sullivan with Joe Cox

I have always been fascinated by Folklore and Myths, so I knew Treacle Walker would be a hit. Digging into old English beliefs and stories, Alan Garner created a fun and coming of age adventure where a little boy meets a strange traveler, possibly from another Realm. If you love the work of Terri Windling, Neil Gaiman, Susanna Clarke or Ellen Kushners Thomas the Rhymer, you will fall in love with Alan Garners book.

When Ive gone through 2 chapters without highlighting a single passage I knew this aint for me. Gotta move on.

Book news! A new edition of the Victorian shilling shocker 'The Master of Hullingham Manor' will be published on 29 November. It includes a long introduction by me.

I just finished reading the 'Into the Void: From Birth to Black Sabbath and Beyond'. It is a of Geezer Butler, the bass player in Black Sabbath (arguably the fathers of ).

I enjoy reading music-related and this book is one of the best I have read in the genre. Perhaps because the narrative feels honest and candid. It is also relatively short and easy to read.

Although it has its dose of the usual anecdotes on drugs and debauchery, which becomes tiring pretty quickly, it also includes compelling insights into aspects such as the music business (they were rip off as most bands of the time were), family and social background, or the meaning of many of their songs.

I highly recommend it for people that like this genre.
