One curious detail in the is the death of Paul's son.

I'm not entirely sure why this is in the book.

It could be to justify his vengeance, or it could be to show the price of aiming for power, or it could be to show how Paul doesn't care about it (because he doesn't really show much caring about it.)

It's not entirely clear. It's just a feature and it doesn't really amount to anything story-wise.
