I liked it quite a bit. I would say that the parts that got into minds and feelings of the instances were the most interesting to me. I could have done with more of that actually!

I was significantly less fond of the last third of the book, which contains what feels like a bunch of perfunctory action. BUT I would absolutely say it's worth reading.

I bought a (Son of the century) but Im not enjoying it. The subject is interesting but the writing style doesnt really suit me. I keep having to reread sentences. I tried several times now but I cant get into a comfortable flow. This rarely happens to me but Im still a bit disappointed. Guess Ill just sell the book.

Julian Sabreur is investigating an attack on top physicist Kay Amal Khan. This leads Julian to clash with agents of an unknown power - and they may or may not be human. His only clue is grainy footage, showing a woman who supposedly died on Bodmin Moor. Dr Khan's research was theoretical then she found cracks between our world and parallel Earths. Now these cracks are widening, revealing extraordinary creatures. And as the doors crash open, anything could come through.
Review: This is the first time I've read an Adrian Tchaikovsky book to be disappointed by the time I finished it. I don't really think it's bad, and there was plenty I liked about it! The speculative evolution is, of course, fantastic, it's a cool take on parallel worlds, and I can appreciate that he went in a new direction with this book with a more character-focused plot with multiple storylines at play. In a way, it reminds me a little of City of Last Chances, but I think he pulled off an ensemble cast in that book much better than in this one. I'm going to spoiler the rest of this because I think it might ruin your experience of the book if you haven't read it yet, so read this review at your own peril.
The main characters in this book are Lee (a girl whose girlfriend disappeared 4 years ago), Julian (an MI5 agent), Alison (an analyst working for MI5), and Lucas (a henchman). The story rotates between Lee and Mal's relationship, Julian and Alison's investigations, and Lucas's henchmanning under the comically evil Daniel Rove. Also another important character is Doctor Kay Amal Khan, who's a genius mathematician who so happens to be trans.
I think this book suffers from a few things all at once which contributed to me not liking this book. I don't find the characters that engaging. Lee is a pretty boring character, and her arc in this book is to simply be clueless, either follow her girlfriend or get kidnapped, and have information told to her as exposition. Alison was a cool character we don't spend enough time with, but I found Julian to be quite boring as well - his character development in this book amounts to relationship drama and that's about it. Lucas is a henchman for Daniel Rove, who is a rich man trying to larp as Lex Luthor and kinda failing. He's so comically evil that I really can't take him as seriously as the book wants me to. Lucas just does his bidding and rarely has thoughts of mutiny until the end of the book, so again a pretty uninteresting character to follow. The second most interesting character (after Alison) is Doctor Kay Amal Khan, since she's not only a genius working with the British government and a trans woman but also the lynchpin to the whole plot to the point where people attempt to either kidnap her or ferry her to safety to get her to do something with the parallel worlds for the entire book. Interesting but disappointing because I really wish she had gotten more character development or a longer POV from her.
So the book has a lot of uninteresting characters who really don't get a lot of character development outside of Alison, but this book is also telling all of their stories "parallel" (sorry) to various factions or peoples in parallel worlds which also require exposition to understand and explain who they are and where they came from in Earth's evolutionary history and what they want with Doctor Kay Amal Khan. All of that combined meant that there was, at once, too much exposition, and not enough character development, in a book that I think is still too long and too boring. It took so long for the exposition and plot to pay off that by the end it was somewhat unsatisfying.
So unfortunately, I think I didn't enjoy this book at all. Hopefully an outlier among his novels.

ADV6 AUTOMATON

I feel like the ecdytoxin has to be an analogue for ai - it warps everything it touches into a grotesquerie of extra limbs and eyes and teeth it has permeated the entire revivalist society so that the entire upper class is constantly drenched in its perfume, distorting their perceptions of reality they don't quite know how to deal with someone who doesn't use / is immune to it when something comes along that destroys it, everything they've built with it disintegrates into chaos.

The scenes where they're obtaining it by feeding artworks to the contriver worms feel almost too on the nose.

The Works of Vermin is delightfully weird, a writhing tapestry of characters and plotlines that twist around each other and double back as the author gradually reveals the design.

I didn't know what to expect after Leech, and this certainly doesn't have many superficial similarities, except maybe for a certain focus on the inhuman.

It is fantastical and deranged and byzantine and wonderful.

History has proven time and time again that theaters are made to burn.

Fletcher and the Flying Machine by John Drake, Review

A high-flying, high-seas adventure.

I should back up a bit with this review. This is Book Seven of the . It is also the last part of a seven-book digital box set that I had the good fortune of picking up for 99 while it was on sale. I think it currently runs for $2.99, which is still a ridiculously good deal.

I bought the set because I was planning on writing my own nautical adventure novel, which is coming out soon, thank you very much! I wanted to read more in the genre to get a good feel for it. Seven books for a dollar seemed like a good deal. But to be honest, at that price, I had a hard time believing theyd be any good.

I decided I would at least toil through one, and forgive myself the rest. I figured that would still be a dollar well spent. Wow, was I wrong in my assumption. I love these books! Im happy to say Ive read the entire box set. I broke it up over a year, reading other books on my list in between each novel in the set. But I was always excited to come back to my good ole Uncle Jacob and read another Jacky Flash adventure.

The character is really what makes it so good. Its mostly a first-person narrative, allegedly dictated by an aging Admiral Jacob Fletcher. Hes vain, egotistical, but good-hearted and lovable. Author John Drake has mastered the voice of an old sea salt, making the storytelling warm, real, and authentic.

I say its mostly a first-person narrative because the concept behind the series is that the author had won Fletchers memoirs at an auction and is merely editing them into novels. Along with the first-person memoirs were a collection of letters and news clippings from which the author is allegedly able to flesh out the other perspectives of the story in third-person. I usually dont like first and third person switching in novels it always feels like a gimmick or cheating. But Drake sells it very well. There are even notes added from the man who allegedly took Fletchers dictation and added them after Fletchers death to contradict some of the old mans delusional rants.

Of course, all of this is purely fiction conjured up by Drakes brilliant mind. Much of the adventures are too. However, theyre deeply rooted in the real events of the time with nods to real historical characters. But whats most important is Drakes adherence to and deep technical knowledge of the sailing and naval warfare tactics of the era. I learned so much about how the ships worked and how combat went from reading these books. Drake is an excellent teacher. He explains things in simple and exciting ways that a modern-day landlubber like me can understand.

is a great capstone to the box set. Like some of the other books, its almost like two novellas coupled together as opposed to one novel. Theres some setup in the beginning that explains the epic climax of the second part, but other than that, there are really two separate adventures in this book.

The first part deals with an Irish rebellion and the French attempt at occupying the island. Fletcher is sent with a squadron to hold off an Imperial invasion fleet and ends up getting involved in a land battle as well.

The second part is a commando-style mission where Fletcher and an elite team sail a fast and nimble brig into the Baltic Sea to save a duchess whos besieged in a castle on the Finnish/Russian frontier.

is good fun and a compelling read. Now that Ive read through the whole box set, I have added the now-out-and-available Book Eight to my to-be-read list. What can I say, Im a Fletcher fan!
