Book4 Poems on Reading by Yongbo Ma
Reading Poetry on a Rainy Night
This is no new revelation
lamps drift like beetles among the trees.
When the rain stops, crowds emerge
to speak, their words indistinct.
I begin to doubt if it ever rained at all.
A man hurrying home in the lull
seems pinned by shadows under the branches.
He strides in, climbs stairs, opens a window.
Darkness stirswind tilting raindrops sideways
and I wonder if I was ever truly reading,
or if the window was ever opened,
as though no one had ever entered here.
Reading in Flickering Light
The sky flickers, dim and bright by turns.
This is autumn at a crossroads in a small northern town.
I wait for a friend,
reading an old book bought from a local shop.
As I read, one or two girls in boots clatter past,
each one bearing her likeness.
From which direction will she come
from the past, or the future
The sky still flickers, dim and bright.
If she never comes, I will go on reading
until every page fades to blankness,
until all who wander the streets
turn into dark, solitary words.
I have long forgotten
which autumn, on which distant planet that was,
and who exactly I was waiting for.
A Vast Crowd Waits for Me at Home
They must be whispering to one another
Homer tunes his lyre, ready to sing of a mans wrath
Milton describes Satan and the flames of brimstone to his daughter
Borges, seizing the moment, condenses the universe into a single chart
Heraclitus and Parmenides
argue on and on about process and essence
Lucretius hangs aloft swarms of souls
heavy-laden, until they transform into the farthest stars
Ovid wanders alone on the shores of the Black Sea
Time his only companion
Dante counts the laurel leaves upon Virgils brow
Faust, racked with a splitting headache, is not weary of knowledge
only weary of his obstinate lover-pupil
Keats, eager, invites me to shine with him
Bishop, who loved women, prepares with green wine bottles
to teach me an art of losing, not hard to master
Pigeons rise from the abyss, wrapped in dense fog
Ariadne still clutches her ball of thread, sword laid at her feet
Odysseus black sails sail on beyond the setting sun
This whole lot babbles loudly, bumping foreheads with one another
only the nameless guest leans by the window, watching the rain outside
As if when I walk out, the rain drifts farther away
as if from now on, I am always on my way home
I know when I suddenly push open the door,
they will all wipe their expressions clear
like seabirds nesting on the cliff of a bookshelf, eyes bright and sharp
gazing silently down at a newborn infant
Spending a Quiet Afternoon Reading Ovid on the Double Ninth Festival
Sunlight glimmers high above.
Chrysanthemums everywhere shake their small fists in quiet protest.
Green mountains lie not far away. I do not go,
yet they remain, unchanging.
Autumn and silence abide there too,
as do the brown birds.
For years, they have trodden through fallen leaves,
wandering toward the deeper mountains,
like a crowd of noisy, tumbling children leaving school.
The gaunt little lake lingers there,
lingering over blue skies and distant echoes.
Dark silt hidden in reed beds,
a frail symbol of humanity, also dwells there.
And so I stay at home,
on the low southern slopes of Purple Mountain,
immersed in Ovids recollections,
lingering through a slow, tranquil afternoon.
He preserves autumn cherries in dark crimson lees.
For he once said:
so long as one knows not who he is,
one may live long into old age.

Romantasy. Live atthe Spiegeltent!
The Books & Beverages event for July had a truly mystical feel to it.  Not just because the topic was Romantasy, but because it took place in the Spiegel Tent as part of the Harrogate International Festival.  The tent which takes its name from the mirrors which circle the upper walls was colourful, highly decorated and light and airy.  Thank you to Harrogate Library for offering this opportunity to us.
Our two authors, Natalie Horner and Kate Kenzie, write books which combine romance with magic and imagination.  Natalies book, Wings, is set in Manhattan and tells the story of a girl, Charlie, from a dysfunctional family who longs to escape her abusive and controlling father but as a result of an attack she also loses her mother.  Natalie manages to combine a story which reflects many aspects of modern life with the supernatural introduction of a Guardian Angel. The story swings from Charlies despair with her loss of family to a longing for more than friendship with Michael, her all-seeing, protective savour and Angel.  There promises to be more books tracking this relationship in the future.
Kates book, A Blend of Magic, is set in the atmospheric town of Whitby, a place of ginnels and hidden buildings which lend themselves to the idea of witchery.  Kates white witch, Willow, has had a disturbing background and is looking for somewhere to set up on her own and use her skills to help people.  She makes different concoctions of tea to treat the ills of the local people.  Her discovery of an old cottage which the local estate agents have failed to sell is just perfect and she moves in immediately to share it with the ghosts that have already taken up residence and her familiar, Vincent.  The arrival of Nate, a city businessman, at first irritates her but then as they become attracted to one another her life seems to be changing for the better.  In the midst of this her assistant Amber thinks that Willow should marry her widowed father and uses her magical skills to try and bring the two together.  However, the course of true love never did run smoothly but with a bit of patience, perseverance and a little bit of magic it all comes out well in the end.
This was a wonderful and informative conversation about romance, magic, creating supernatural worlds and the inspiration behind two very different Romantasy stories.

Not Your Rescue Project: Migrant sex workers fighting for justice
Chanelle Gallant Elene Lam
2024-11-12
Haymarket Books
Website:
> A landmark abolitionist primer on migration, sex work, policing, and the anti-trafficking industryand a powerful argument about who is really leading the way toward justice: migrant sex workers themselves.
> In this impassioned corrective to decades of misguided, carceral approaches to migration and sex work, long-time organizers Chanelle Gallant and Elene Lam deftly expose the harms of criminalization in the name of anti-trafficking and lift up migrant sex workers organizing in the US, Canada, and elsewhere. In doing so, they make the compelling case that the only effective response to the needs of migrant sex workers must be led by migrants in the sex trade, as they fight for rights, safety, and autonomy.
> Gallant and Lam illustrate how this movement is taking aim at the root causes of violence and abuse: the white supremacist securitization of borders, the criminalization of both migration and sex work, the patriarchial devaluation of womens labor, and forced displacement due to climate disaster, war, and povertyall fueled by racial capitalism.
> An indispensable exploration of the relationship between migration and sex workand the underlying societal conditions they reflectNot Your Rescue Project is a thorough indictment of the anti-trafficking industry as an engine of criminalization and state violence, and an instructive account of the emancipatory politics already being practiced by migrant sex workers in their organizing. Throughout, Gallant and Lam place migrant sex workers at the center of struggles against border imperialism, carceral states, and capitalismdispelling a range of poisonous myths and paving the way for deeper alliances across movements with the shared goal of dismantling and abolishing carceralism in all its forms.

The Bewitching is Silvia Moreno-Garcia at her best, my favorite since Mexican Gothic - I really enjoyed the way she wove the three related timelines together.
A few chapters in, I started wondering to what degree Minerva was a self-insert, but then in the acknowledgements the author admitted it was basically 100%. So an author writing herself into a story involving an author who writes a horror novel based on her life :blobhyperthink:

"Der Krieg der Welten"
"1898 verffentlichte H. G. Wells seinen mittlerweile zu den absoluten Klassikern zhlenden Roman Der Krieg der Welten. Die Geschichte einer auerirdischen Invasion war die erste ihrer Art, begrndete das moderne Science-Fiction-Genre und verankerte die Figur des Marsmenschen in der kollektiven Vorstellungswelt."
