Latest read! Emma by Jane Austen. Never read before and borrowed it after I devoured Pride and Prejudice. I definitely took longer to warm up to this. Emma is a difficult character to root for and the other characters who turn out to be good are all concealing their true selves for about 90% of the book.
I liked the ending! Contrast with P&P where I identified so hard with Elizabeth Bennet throughout, this just felt differently. Im not even sure I want to watch a TV or film adaptation of Emma now. (Clueless was based on this)

Somehow, without knowing exactly how, I wrote 9 books and all of them are published!

Mostly historical fiction, with some travel and memoir mixed in.

A terrific concept/conceit for a terrifying modern world clash with older, darker magics unfortunately, somewhat defanged by its sprawling narrative and a few too tidy and predictable horror tropes.

July (book 4 of )... Started "Never Let Me Go" by Kazou Ishiguro today

Today I finished The Beekeeper Of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri. A fantastic book, highly recommended. Should be required reading for anyone lacking empathy for people fleeing (usually very reluctantly) their country in search of a safer life.

Last few days to get this for $3.99. ($6 off)

"Rayner is brilliant! His writing is a strange and exhilarating mixture of the cerebral and the entertaining ... Alpha Max is a crazy and wild ride. I enjoyed it very much. Karen Molenaar Terrell, author of Cosmic Connections: Sharing the Joy

Finished Explorer by CJ Cherryh, sixth in the Foreigner series. Bren Cameron has been named "lord of the heavens" by his boss, the Atevi ruler Tabini, and sent with his Atevi bodyguards & staff, and Tabini's powerful grandmother with his only heir in tow, on a long space voyage to the distant human station which was attacked by a dangerous new species. The ship's senior captain Sabin is angry about Tabini forcing his influence onto her ship, obstructing them at every turn. But when they reach the station Bren knows they've been lied to. In fact the lies and subterfuge are thick and Bren, his friend and junior ship captain Jase, and the Atevi assassin's guild contingent must work together to rescue the thousands of station personnel and captain Sabin herself from a recalcitrant Ship Guild leadership and the dangerous enemy that has been watching over the station for 6 years. It's Bren's job to establish communications with the aliens and find out what happened in the long ago attack. This book had a lot of intrigue and action, and it was one of my favorite of the series so far.

Zahlreiche historische Romane haben Ketts Rebellion thematisiert: Mistress Haselwode: A tale of the Reformation Oak (1876) von Frederick H. Moore For Kett and Countryside (1910) von F.C. Tansley The Great Oak (1949) von Jack Lindsay A Rebellious Oak (2012) von Margaret Callow und Tombland (2018) von C.J. Sansom. bookstadonQuelle:

Today in Labor History July 20, 1549: Kett's Rebellion against the enclosures began. Insurgents began destroying enclosures in Morley St. Botolph on July 6. When they attacked the estate of John Flowerdew, on July 20, he tried to bribe them into attacking the estate of Robert Kett, instead. However, the plan backfired when Kett joined the rebels and helped them to tear down his own fences. Their 3,500-strong peoples' army captured Norwich. They tried landowners en masse and established a Commonwealth on Mousehold Heath. The movement gained strength, with the army growing to 16,000. The authorities eventually quashed the rebellion. Overall, 3,000 rebels and 250 mercenaries of the state died in the battles. But Kett refused the King's pardon, arguing: "Kings are wont to pardon wicked persons, not innocent men. We have done nothing to deserve such a pardon. We have been guilty of no crime." In response, the authorities tortured and hanged Kett slowly over several days.

Numerous historical novels have portrayed Kett's rebellion: Mistress Haselwode: A tale of the Reformation Oak (1876), by Frederick H. Moore For Kett and Countryside (1910), by F.C. Tansley The Great Oak (1949), by Jack Lindsay A Rebellious Oak (2012), by Margaret Callow and Tombland (2018), by C.J. Sansom.

I expected to like That Inevitable Victorian Thing by E.K. Johnston, but it turned out to be a dumpster fire of unexamined pro-imperialist, pro-eugenics nonsense. Im all for alternate histories, but they have to treat serious subject matters respectfully. The brief reference to Judaism was annoying too. The Anglican Church adopted rabbinical thinking. :blobcatupsidedown: Heres my longer review.
