"Remarkably Bright Creatures" rarely refers to humans in these confusing times...In this book, it mainly refers to Marcellus, a giant pacific octopus, who is an unlikely narrator in this highly original book by Shelby Van Pelt-recommended.

In the spirit of sharing what you love I give you the second greatest in the world The Flavour Thesaurus by Niki Segnit. This wondrous book documents flavour pairings that complement one another. It's all black on white text. (No sumptuous pictures of recipes prepared by professional food stylists to make you feel a failure when your effort does not match.) In fact, there are not really any "proper" recipes. But if you love and it is bursting with ideas.

On a car trip down through Mississippi to New Orleans, Patterson stopped in the town of Merigold, and in search of a cold drink, stumbled into what looked like a functioning general store. At that time, Gong Co. was indeed in business, but somehow it had been largely left behind by the modern world, its rickety shelves filled with decades old products. Over the next twenty years, Patterson visited the store now and then, watching it continue to decline and decay, the time warp continuing to trap the place in amber until it eventually closed (in 2013) and the building was demolished (in 2019). Gong Co. documents the arc of that single small town store, as seen primarily through photographs Patterson made there. CollectorDaily

In her magisterial book The Great Partition, Yasmin Khan offers a sobering conclusion: The Partition of 1947 is also a loud reminder, should we care to listen, of the dangers of colonial interventions and the profound difficulties that dog regime change. It stands testament to the follies of empire, which ruptures community evolution, distorts historical trajectories and forces violent state formation from societies that would otherwise have taken differentand unknowablepaths. Partition is a lasting lesson of both the dangers of imperial hubris and the reactions of extreme nationalism. For better or worse, two nations continue to live alongside each other in South Asia and continue to live with these legacies.

Out now:

I didnt read this as a kid, but I wish I had if only to compare how I felt then to how I felt when I read this as an adult.
The kid in this - our protagonist - is a little shit of a bastard, especially to his parents and it was beyond frustrating to read as an adult.
I am convinced that the reason it was tough to read as an adult was because my kids had been around for a while by that point and I was well aware what kind of sacrifices are required for them and how much easier life was without children.
Now, Im not saying I wish I hadnt had kids or anything. Dont get me wrong. But there is a high level of sacrifice, stress, financial requirements, and random restraints to your life that come solely from kids.
Take buying a house. With no kids, you could buy a small house anywhere you want. But with kids you need to buy a house thats bigger, ideally in a good school zone so the price of the house will rise not only because of size and materials but because youre being charged a premium solely because you like your kids enough to want them to succeed in life.
I love my kids, but kids in general are undeniably a weight to be carried for decades.
And its not for everyone. I completely understand when people say kids arent for them.
Anyway, because of all this, it always kills me when some awful kid character in a book is mean to their parents. Or demanding. Spoiled to the point of being Veruca Salt.
I hate it just knowing how tough it had to be to raise that fictional character to that point.
So in this, I was kind of okay with the idea of a mad scientist hacking this kids hands off. I was actually a pretty big fan of the idea.
Alas, this is one book where Stines promise of not hurting the kid actually comes through.

Books In Twenty Years

What I really would like to know is how book stores will look in 20 years

What would a book store look like Ill have a stab. Eighteen years ago the Internet existed, the Web was newly born. I come from Melbourne. Melbourne really is a book city with bookshops catering for different interests.

Those who liked comics, science fiction or books on artwork gravitated towards Minotaur in Swanston Street, classics or first editions, Hill of Content on Collins, old books and out of print first editions, theres a small shop at the top of Swanston Street. The general public might go to a chain bookshop like Collins or Angus and Robinsons. But if it was anything technical, you turned to McGills.

Both of these books are slow burn romances.
Left Field Love is one of the most slow burn romance books I have read to date. But it's a romance that develops through a long period of time and hardships. Overall, I was satisfied with the ending of the book.
The Letters We Keep by Nisha Sharma is set in a university, and the story interconnects a campus legend with the present situation Ravi and Jessie are in.

I've started reading my short stories on my channel. I'm calling it "Story Time!" I'd love some feedback on my approach and the stories themselves.

Revenge of the Mutant Algorithms: 3, Universal Soldier Bin.

Wildly imaginative extrapolation of lots of things wrong with the world of today, dressed up as futuristic Gothic horror and presented with some dreamlike incongruity.

I'm taking an English class this term, and one of the assignments is to keep a reading journal. I decided that mine needed illustrations, which I work on during class discussions.

We'll see if I can keep the journal going after the class is finished.

Just finished listening to a corruption of blood by ambrose parry. Its the third book in the raven crime series, set in victorian Edinburgh. Dr. Raven is the assistant to the famous dr.
