When you discover that something youve written is listed in a Further Reading section, alongside selected works by the Venerable Bede and Isidore of Seville no less, it really does put a smile on your face. Thanks for the mention, Amy!

John Vaillant writes:

Whatever form their products take, there is no getting around the fact that, wartime or peacetime, companies trade in ... Their products are made of materials capable of burning with great intensity-even if they are not advertised that way.

It raises a grave question: What role does the petroleum industry play in promoting and approving building materials that are supposed to shelter families from harm

From the , Fire Weather

An urgent reading for our new century of fire.

Rarely does one come across a that provides such vivid descriptions of the destructive power of and a reimagining of a pyric infection that threatens to remake the planet.

John Vaillant's book 'Fire Weather' is an intertwined history of the oil industry and climate, and the unprecedented devastation brought by modern wildfires.

Highly recommended.

1969 A cartoon of a man in a rabbit suit

This is an image that depicts a whimsical scene of a man dressed in a rabbit costume.
The image, which appears to be a combination of a painting and a drawing, has strong elements of illustration and fiction.
With a high likelihood of being an animated cartoon, the art style is reminiscent of a child's artwork, adding to its charm.
The image is likely related to comics or cartoon, making it perfect for a book cover or a storybook illustration.
Whether it's a character in a children's book or a mascot for a special event, the image is sure to spark imagination and curiosity.

I just read Omnibus by Hugh Howey, months after I watched the series based on the . I must say I have enjoyed the book as much as the TV series. And possibly, having seen the TV series before was positive as otherwise I feel I would have imagined a duller world.

To me, the strongest point of the book is the premise it is based on, about a toxic world where surviving societies live in subterranean silos.

I found a few questionable aspects of the book (e.g. how they can grow food or materials to build thousands of suits), but I suppose this is fine given the complexity of world the author has built.

In terms of writing, it can be a bit repetitive (stairs everywhere!), often too descriptive, and the end seems rushed, but generally fine.

Yesterday we published The Hardcover 2023 Year in Books. It's a look at the most popular books of the year across genres, trends, months and more.

A number of the authors featured have a presence here on Mastodon! We left the other site ourselves in 2023, and love to see more authors here.

I wanted to create a thread to callout a few of them that have released new books that were popular with the Hardcover community.
