If you're looking to read a consider this:

"Sheftall spent years interviewing hibakushathe Japanese word for atomic bomb survivors. These last living witnesses are a vanishing memory resource, the only people who can still provide us with reliable and detailed testimony about life in their cities before the use of nuclear weaponry"

The author lets the interviewees speak and, in most of the book, is neutral without being careless. It ends with a reflective epilogue discussing the now.

"Do not seek the door, or the way out anywhere but in the wall that surrounds us. On the contrary, let us seek respite wherever it exists, that is, in the very heart of the battle."

Talk to the boat next door.

The first I've bought in 2026 goes right to the pile, since it's a sequel, and I didn't finish reading the first book yet, but it's "The Ether Witch (2)" by Delemhach. I didn't even realize the second book came out months ago, but it was on sale on the Kindle store for $1, and I had credits, so I nabbed it.

The Belladonna series by Adalyn Grace is my favorite completed fantasy series of 2025. Although there are other great fantasy series that I read this year, like Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber, this is the one that held an extra special place in my heart this year.
I did start this series in December 2024 with Belladonna, and I completed the trilogy with the next two books, Foxglove and Wisteria, in January 2025. I am hoping to finish reading Holly, the holiday special this month.

Taking FREE BOOKS on some house visits
When we started collecting and investigating the minibieb landscape, we quickly came to realise that one design is particularly popular. More often than not, their exterior form resembles the idiosyncratic shape of a childs drawing of a detached house. As we expanded our research, we increasingly encountered other common architectures and shared characteristics, which inspired the definition of a typology of 12 distinct minibieb categories that structure the book. But the house shape remains by far the most popular one, especially in the Netherlands.

First of 2026 finished: Native Nations: A Millennium in North America. I sort of reviewed it earlier, but finishing it, I can absolutely see why it won a Pulitzer Prize in History. So good, and another one of those, "Holy shit, why was my school history SO BAD" books. (Answer that shocks no one: Racism)

Anyhow, reading about the variety of nations in the Americas and the sweep of their history from early time to now was illuminating and engaging. Absolutely recommend.

Happy National Science Fiction Day, everybody!

In honor of the day, my favorite book by Isaac Asimov:

Never knew Asimov wrote a book about Musk.

Good morning.

2 January 2026

I'm still sipping on my first cup of coffeenow lukewarmbecause when I'm working, I tend to focus and ignore the cup except for those brief pauses when I remember to pick it up. While typing this, I wondered why it's called lukewarm and who Luke was. As you might guess, I took the time to look it up.

Luke isnt a name at all hmm well it is, but not in this context. Here, luke is an archaic Old English word meaning tepid. And before you think someone named Luke is essentially named tepid, thats not right either. The name Luke comes from the Latin Lucas or Lucius, meaning light or illumination. So there you have ita bit of notsouseful information I stumbled across while writing.

I finished a novel by David Baldacci, Strangers in Time, last night. It was well written and interesting, but not his usual cup of tea. Most of his books that Ive read are mysterythrillers. This one was differentand honestly, I think written better. I have to admit that halfway through, I was still waiting for a time traveler to reveal himself. You really cant judge a book by its cover or its title. No scifi here instead, its a riveting drama about three peoplea man, a girl, and a boythrown together in the chaos, devastation, and loss of the London Blitz during World War II.

Next on my reading list is The Widow by John Grisham, which is likely a legal drama. After that, Im not sure. Im thinking about finding something by Carl Hiaasen that I havent readhe is hilarious.

I need to wrap this up and head out for a walk with Charlie. Cheers.
