I'm nearly 70 and have been rereading the original Dune series since it was first published, and like Le Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea, I, a poly-ethnic Black woman, loved reading something high concept, something mythic, that for a rare change, was absolutely NOT Eurocentric.
For decades I have been attacked for raising many of the points the video make about fans and later Denis Villeneuves white washing of Frank Herbert's Dune saga.

Follow us and join a national movement defending the freedom to read and fighting for library funding everywhere.
In a draft budget proposal put out by the Republican Study Committee, extreme House Republicans are once again proposing to eliminate federal funding for libraries.
They are nothing if not persistent. And that might be the most dangerous thing.

Another great acquisition today. I saw this and other interesting art/architecture books at 75% discount at the local FNAC.
When I went to pay for it, I expected the discount to be applied to the original book's price (if you search this on Amazon, youll find it at about 36), so we're talking about 9.
It turns out that they applied the discount *to the already reduced price* of 9.95 they were selling it previously.
Moral of the story: I paid 2.49 for this(!!)

School Board President of Los Angeles Unified School District, Jackie Goldberg, has gone viral for calling out a radical group in her community that wanted to ban the childrens picture book The Great Big Book of Families because of one sentence.
Any way, I said that just as metagamers could hack organisational structures and procedures to promote themselves without needing to be good at the primary task of the organisation, so there were people out there who could do it to human society. Sociopaths of a kind, essentially, who could give out all the right signals to get people to do things for them without ever actually having what youd think of as a truly human existence inside their head.

Book 15 of Discworld and the second book of the City Watch miniseries. A full 10 years after the beginning of the series and it was still going strong. I am reading them all in order, except for one exception so far.
There would definitely be advantages to reading the separate miniseries in order rather than all of them but I like seeing how the whole unfolded as it was published.
I still favor the Death books over the Witches, Wizards, and City Watch books so far. The stand alone ones have been quite good too, so far. Wizards are my second favorite, so far. Carrot is growing on me though. Love his connections to Dwarf culture despite being a big strong human. The undead are a fine addition to the city of Ankh-Morpork as well as the little dragons from Guards! Guards!.
