I finished reading Hothouse by Brian W. Aldiss, my tenth book of 2024! and here are my thoughts on it.
This is day 75 of
Communicate with your local boat owners.I finished The Twyford Code by Janice Hallett, and I have decided she's a bit of a genius really. All her books so far are puzzle-novels entirely based on various recordings or correspondence, and I'd say how much you enjoy each one would highly depends on your personal type.
The Appeals series is JK Rowling style modern toxic small English village pettiness, and the novella The Christmas appeal is that but more extreme social commentary brutal comedy. The Atherton Angels is about a cut throat urban writer who would do anything to get her scope.
I couldn't finish Atherton Angels because how much I detested the protagonist, even though I don't think the book would've worked if she's any less awful. At the time I thought it was because she's too much of a pathological liar. Now after The Twyford Code I can say that I don't mind thrillers' unreliable narrator to be a liar: just that Amanda Bailey was so bad at being a pathological liar and it was infuriating.
Steve Smith, on the other hand, is my favourite narrator by far. Partly because I'd say I'm more likely him than any of the other protagonists of Hallett, partly because he doesn't lie for no reasons. All his deceptions were carefully crafted, with highly specific goal in mind. That makes the puzzle he created a lot more interesting, than Amanda Bailey or Sarah-Jane's bullshitting for no reasons. A lot of this is because they are puzzle books. Puzzles with excessive pointless noise really don't make them satisfying.
I do have to admit that as per all Hallett books, the actual plot is the weakest part. The character traits behaviours will change based on plot needs, frequently contradictory to each other. The over arching mystery is rarely tight enough that stands for any real scrutiny. In a way, it's about activating readers' specific part of the brain, while we really must turn off every other part or it will become irritating. So I suppose it's kinda like some of the 00s JDetective VNs
Despite of that, I enjoyed it. There isn't a very big genre of puzzle books in English language, and in a way it's closest to the particular subtype of VN that I love. Flawed as it is.

Treat yourself, your coauthors, and your students to a time-saving resource that will facilitate clearer and more engaging communications. As they say, a graphic is worth a thousand equations. Thomas Jefferson Knew his Greek
Among these, he owned at least two copies of Xenophons Cyropaedia, a biographical novel written in Greek about the Persian Emperor Cyrus the Great (circa 600 530 BCE)
1/2 Just finished reading Emergent Tokyo: Designing the Spontaneous City by Jorge Almazan & Studiolab, and I really enjoyed it! It highlights different types of urbanism that exist in Tokyo including narrow alleys lined with small shops/housing, vertical shopping buildings, markets underneath train stations & freeways, and more, each with multiple examples and diagrams. It also teaches about the history of how these spaces came to be before/during/after World War II.

I have finally finished !!! Enough to say that the idea seemed good, but really the story could have been told in an hour
I'm getting the same feeling from my enthusiastic thoughts to read the - it's not pulling me in, and I'm itching to ditch it & read another book.
Ditching something always feels... Bad ( I've already abandoned one book this year)
