My friend Celia first introduced me to 'The Regeneration Trilogy' by Pat Barker. These incredible books tell the stories of Britain's WW1 soldiers and they explore the devastating consequences of what is called 'the Great War'.

Before the creation of the NHS after WW2, organizations like Blind Veterans UK (1915), Combat Stress (1919) and the Royal British Legion (1921) were established to provide care for those left disabled by trench warfare.

WETLANDS IN A DRY LAND
More-than-Human Histories of Australias Murray-Darling Basin, Emily O'Gorman

"What counts as a wetland, especially in Australia, the driest inhabited continent on earth In the name of agriculture, urban growth and disease control, humans have drained, filled or otherwise destroyed nearly 87 percent of the world's wetlands over the past three centuries. Only recently have wetlands been widely recognised as worth preserving for their diverse plants, animals, insects, and their human histories."

"Situating Australia's history within global environmental humanities conversations, O'Gorman argues that we need to understand wetlands as socioecological landscapes that transcend the nature-culture divide and to embrace non-Western ways of knowing and being. Only then can we begin to create sustainable relationships with, and futures for, the wetlands."

I finished reading Lord of the Flies for the first time today. We didn't have to read it in school, but I think we should have.

It wasn't as bad as I had expected the way people talked about it I was expecting it to be a lot worse than it was. They barely got into the torture.

It should have ended with all of them dead, they all sucked and deserved it.

He Who Drowned the World (Shelley Parker-Chan) The sequel to She Who Became The Sun continues the saga of Zhu Yuanzhang, the peasant girl turned monk turned king who now marches on the throne to become emperor. Surrounded by enemies, Zhu gambles on an alliance with the eunuch general Ouyang (who happens to hate Zhus guts and cut off her hand) and help him to avenge his fathers killer.

Its certainly a worthy sequel to this blend of real history and transmasc Mulan and the fraught relationship between Zhu and Ouyang takes centre stage for me. Zhu as always brings intelligence and brash confidence to every confrontation while in the background the court politics of the Great Khan begin to overtake events.
