May 2025 Wrap-Up

!

A little bit of escapism at the end of the week. Time to read a good book.

Australias showing off with its bright blue skies again, and it reminded me, I actually wrote about something tied to this very aesthetic in my book. So here I am, doing the author thing and reminding you my books full of real globetrotting adventures (some hilarious, some awkward, all true).

I'm going back to embroidery to make a little something for my big brother.
The theme is one of his favourite characters from one of my books so I hope he'll like it.

'Leading and dividing New Brunswick': New book explores Blaine Higgs's legacy
Blaine Higgs "broke an all-time record" for low levels of support in New Brunswick's francophone ridings in the 2020 and 2024 elections, says Gabriel Arsenault, a Universit de Moncton political science professor.

I was told Tim Dorsey writes like Christopher Moore so I had to check him out.
And the writing style is similar, but where Moores characters are a lovable bunch of misfits in a city he obviously loves, Dorseys characters arent as they are far, far more murderous and ambivalent, and Florida is painted in an unflattering light.
Not that Florida has a lot of stuff that could be shown in a POSITIVE light
I think its the difference in characters that really got me. Dorseys characters - even the primary that I hear is supposed to be the hero (or antihero) of the series isnt so much lovable goof as goofy sociopath.
And sociopath lovable.
Honestly, a lot of the characters feel like sociopaths or at least homicidally selfish and that made it less fun to read.
And yeah, while I think Florida kinda sucks after living there for too damn long, its undeniable that Moore uses his love of settings to make you the reader want to spend time there with the characters and Dorsey doesnt.
I didnt enjoy it nearly as much as I wanted to, but I didnt hate it enough to stop and I want to see if these characters grow on me in subsequent books.
Comme toujours en dbut de mois, cest lheure du bilan sur le blog. Un petit retour sur mes 8 trs bonnes lectures de mai mais aussi sur les sries en cours de visionnage et les jeux auxquels jai jou. Rendez-vous sur le blog:

Here's my short critique of the Rosemary's Baby

" Rob Kutner suggests that perhaps its time to laugh.

Right now, we are feeling trapped in the endless news cycle of bad news for , he said. We have a layer of doomscrolling within doomscrolling. It's hard to break out, but laughter and which operate through surprise are sometimes the only ways to do so.

The just published his new hilarious , The Jews: 5,000 Years and Counting.

THE GUNCLE by Steven Rowley.
What an unexpextedly delightful surprise this book was! Gay Uncle Patrick, or GUP, is a has-been TV sitcom star, who lives a comfortable and secluded life in Palm Springs. Suddenly he is thrust into the role of parent to his little niece and nephew when his sister-in-law (and best friend) dies, and his brother checks himself into rehab. He obviously adores the kids but being a fulltime caregiver to two grieving children is something else entirely, and he is still very much grieving the death of his partner Joe, many years before.
Patrick is a wonderful character. He is at once larger than life, flamboyant, and unwilling to talk down to the children or change his life. But he is also vulnerable, intuitive to the kids needs, and willing to grow into his role. The kids, Maisie and Grant, are beautifully drawn, full of grief, love for their uncle, and confused by his unorthodox adulting. The side characters are also warm, funny, and true to life.
For all that, this is Patricks story, though, and I loved the way he took a very difficult situation by the horns and made the best of it as he knew how. He makes mistakes but hes willing to learn. His grief is tremendous, both over the old loss of his partner and the new loss of his best friend. Together with the kids he must find a way through.
I found this both warmly funny and a sensitive protrayal of grief. There are sticky situations aplenty, and Patrick navigates them all with heart and humor. Thank heavens I extended my library subscription and grabbed this book on a whim!

For any fans of literature, classical novels and the Bront sisters. A photo of Anne Bronts grave in our local churchyard (St. Marys) taken a few days ago. She died on May 28th 1849, aged 29 (not 28 as per the stone.) The main headstone faded through weathering (the cemeterys situated on an exposed cliff top) and a new stone was added a few years ago to mark the site.
