WITCH KING
Martha Wells

Big asterisk on this review. I'm already not a fantasy fan and have little patience for Proper Nouns or Dramatis Personae. Then I had to pause my reading for 2 weeks when my mom died. I can only say this wasn't for me.

ELDER RACE
Adrian Tchaikovsky

I'm a sucker for any Nausicaa-style "ancient tech re-emerges to cause chaos" story. A subtle connection to Children of Memory here: A grumpy hermit from a forgotten age wielding tech-as-magic to help the locals. Fun read.

HYPERION

Dan Simmons

(Book Club)

I see its influence on SF, but can't ignore its cringe tropes. The Soldier's Tale has SO MUCH sex & violence, I thought it a satire But no, later tales have as much "She breasted boobily down the stairs" as actual cosmic world building.

Oscar Peterson by Jean-Pierre Jackson. For years I've been trying to get my hands on Oscar Peterson's autobiography "A Jazz Odyssey", but it's long out of print and as a consequence unreasonably expensive to buy. I got this cheap little book as the best available substitute. On the plus side, it's a short read, Jackson clearly knows Peterson's life and discography well, and it's well written and clear. On the minus side, it feels like an expanded Wikipedia entry, really skimming through the different parts of his life with a heavy focus on Peterson's early years and putting forward the thesis that post-1972, nothing major came out of Peterson's discography. Since the greatest album by Oscar Peterson (according to me) is the 1981 Nigerian Marketplace, I obviously can't agree with that assertion. Anyway, long story short, I enjoyed reading this, learned a few things, bought an album on the basis of it, and I'm still going to be looking for an affordable copy of A Jazz Odyssey...

I just sent a submission to a university press for In the Name of Mississippi. Totally apart from whether they will want to read the full or not, I'm proud of it. It's a good piece of writing in and of itself.

A study of the effects of four reading styles on college students mental health and quality of life based on positive psychology-A first-of-its-kind study

Paper text reading and audio reading methods were effective in reducing anxiety levels and improving sleep quality. However, the electronic text reading approach was less effective compared to paper text reading and audio reading, and the video reading approach was not effective in improving depression.

Aug 28: Do you incorporate poems, songs, or letters in your work How do you format them

There are song lyrics in my medieval fantasy that are indented and in italics.

For the epub, this was so tedious, and I vowed to not have anything similar again. However, in my WIP, there may be letters needing the same treatment.

At least in the WIP, it would all be in one chapter, unlike , which has the lyrics in various spots.

A humanitarian assessment of Africa and the First World War 1900-1932 OIiver Schulten

Quite enjoying Brandon Sanderson's Secret Project 2 "The Frugal Wizard's Handbook for Surviving Medieval England" on various levels historical (though it's a separate dimension really, not the actual one), comedic, etc.
Bonus points for including a scop, alliterative verse, well-groomed Viking-analogues without any horned helmets, and fun words like wlis, from Proto-Germanic walhiskaz foreign person", usually a Celtic or Romance speaker, from which we got Welsh, but also Walloon.

Today on our podcast Re-Creative and I are joined by writer and poet Abigail Grimes to discuss the classic Ray Bradbury novel Fahrenheit 451.

Abigail makes a great case for why you should read Fahrenheit 451, if you haven't already. It's a fun conversation about the 1950s, how Bradbury wrote the book, and about the writer himself.

We hope you'll listen in!
