I have just finished (consumed, devoured, etc) "Alien Clay" By Adrian Tchaikovsky. A book I got for Christmas from my mrs.
I've never read any of Tchaikovsky's writing before but I noted it won the Arthur C Clarke award so was keen to give it a try.
Man, what a book. I finished it in two sittings. I would have finished it in one but my wife needed me to get up off my big fat arse and help around the house D
It's a thinly veiled discussion on toeing the party line and fitting in with society even when they want to deny the available science and present alt facts. Pretty much what's going on with America at the moment but extrapolated out to fantastic levels.
an alien world where dissidents and "wrong thinkers" are sent to work. In reality they're sent to die. Far away both in distance and time from Earth. Think 1984 but in space and the far future. In fact at one point he actually quotes an appropriate line from 1984. I won't have any spoilers here so read it and find out for yourself.
The world is hostile. Both in the native sense and in the hostile environment of the camp itself. The prisoners have a tier structure of superiority and a deliberately instilled distrust of others. Distrust installed by design by the "warden" of this extra terrestrial prison.
The air on this planet will kill you. it will overwrite your biology and make life , as we know it at least, unviable.
A scientist, a professor, sent for his crimes of trying to uncover the scientific truth opposed to the "truth" being pushed by the party. Very 1984 in it's "newspeak" vibes.
The end is somewhat predictable. But his world building is superb.
A great read and I shall be checking out more of this author's work!
Highly recommended.

Book 54 of 2024. Not really sure where this juvenile work came from, but it ended up on the read pile. This book is light as a feather and sprinkled with groaners. Not worth the time it takes to decode it.
